Hemisphere – The globe can be divided in half two ways.  Each half is called a hemisphere.  When it is divided at the equator,  the southern and northern hemispheres are created.  When it is divided along the Prime meridian and 180 degrees longitude,  the western and eastern hemispheres are created. 

We live in the Northern and Western hemisphere. 

Africa is in the Southern and Eastern hemispheres. 

Andes Mountains

South America contains the longest chain of mountains in the world.   The Andes Mountains run almost parallel with the western coast fo the continent for about 7240 km.  Many of the mountain peaks in this chain are very high.  Some of the tallest peaks are volcanoes. 

The highest mountain in the Andes range is called Aconcagua,  it is 22 831 feet tall. 

The potato is the commonly eaten vegetable which first domesticated in the Andes of Peru,  then carried to the Old World by Spanish explorers.

The animal used as a beast of burden in the Andes is the Llama.

Alpacas are the Andean animal raised for its fine wool.

Amazon Rainforest- The largest tropical rainforest in the world is located in the Amazon River basin.  It is a warm,  rainy, and humid region of lush vegetation, with more species of plants and animals that in all the  rest of the world’s ecosystems combined. 

The Amazon rainforest contains a variety of hardwood trees,  palm trees, and fern trees,  along with other vegetation such as vines and flowers.  Because very little light from the sun can reach the ground,  there is not much undergrowth. 

The Amazon river that runs through the Amazon river Basin is 6,712 km.

Deforestation have caused destruction of the Amazon rainforest.

Gran Chaco and Pampas are large plains and grasslands in many parts of South America. 

The Gran Chaco is a low, flat plain in south central South America.  The Pampas is a vast region of plains in central Argentina that is mostly grasslands with few trees.

Pike Lake May 11 Please Return Forms By Monday

Next Friday, May 11,  the grade 6’s will be travelling to Pike Lake for the day.  We will be leaving the school around 9 am and arriving back around 2:30.  This field trip is designed for all grade 6 students in the Saskatoon Public School Division and we will be participating in 3-4 sessions.   There will be a guide out there. 

The students will be divided into groups.  If you are available to volunteer and lead a group of students to each session that would be great. Contact Mr. Baetz or Mr. Letkeman if you can help. 

The students should dress appropriately for the weather.  It can be very cold and wet this time of year.  Students should bring warm clothing,  proper footwear, and if necessary hats and toques.  It may also be necessary to bring bug spray and suntan lotion.  We are always cautioned to be prepared for ticks and poison ivy.  There is both out there.  If your child has an asthma or allergy,  please ensure they have proper medicine. 

A healthy lunch is also required.  Students should also bring full water bottles as the water may not be drinkable.  Students should bring a backpack to store their lunch and extra clothes.

Science PowerPoint Due June 5th

Students are to pick a chapter from Unit 4 Our Solar System and create a PowerPoint presentation using the information given in the chapter.  The students can add to the chapter ideas and present the PowerPoint and present the chapter to the students starting on June 5th. It should be no more than 15 slides.  If another source besides the textbook is used,  there should be a bibliograpy at the end of the presentation.
The presentation should only be 5-10 minutes long.

Skating at ACT Arena, Friday, April 27th

On Friday, April 27th, from 9:15-11:30,  we will be skating at ACT arena.  The bus will leave at 8:55 am and will pick us up at 11:40.  All students are required to wear helmets.  The rink will be divided into half where students' can skate on one half and on the other half play hockey.  We will be using a sponge puck or a tennis ball.  Students are also encouraged to wear gloves if they are playing hockey.
